What is SOC 2 and where to get it

If SOC (pronounced sock) comes up in discussion or project documentation, chances are you are interacting with a major corporation. Firstly, congratulations on landing the big opportunity. You have entered a world where you interacting with the personal identifiable data of your client’s customer’s data. SOC 2 and other such auditing frameworks serve to inform your client about the your data security practices, data availability, data redundancy, data privacy/confidentiality and data redaction. This is not fun and games. This is serious and should not be glossed over.

You will have to disclose how data is encrypted as rest, encrypted at rest, what is your backup methodology, how often passwords are changed, how access is granted and with drawn and by whom. The most important is has your firm been audited by an external entity(Type I), and have these audits occurred over time(Type II).

Even though it might seem daunting, and seem expensive, it is necessary to make your company dock-able with the bigger firms. Once you have complied with the framework created by the AICPA, you company will be more resistant to IT challenges and will open the doors to future projects with the bigger corporations.
